Tere tulemast Tallinna

All EPs left Riga on Sunday. Some of them home, two of us to Tallinn. Tak and me heard only good things about the city and its beauty. We took the bus and met out host in Estonia, Sergej. After reaching the apartment we had a dinner, found out we will be not short of internet and made our plans for tomorrow. The historical centre of Tallinn is divided into Lower Town and Toompea. Both of them being separate town in the past, Lower Town´s population were tradesmen while Toompea was inhabited by nobility. We started out tour at Raekoja Plats (Town Hall Square) with oldest pharmacy in Europe and town hall looking like a church.

Raekoja Plats

Fortification is still surrounding almost the whole city centre so we took the road next to it and went to St. Olaf´s Church which was for some period of time tallest building in the world. We saw even Tallinn Backpackers Hostel. The whole Lower Town is really well preserved and Tak said, that it looks like the medieval part of Disneyland in Japan. You can buy almonds with different flavours (as we did), taste a hot chocolate (as we did as well) and buy some souvenirs in countless small shops. Although historical part of city centre is medieval, just few minutes away is a modern part of Tallinn with tall buildings and shopping malls. The best view you can get is from Toompea. Toompea is a bit higher than other places in Tallinn and has Toompea Palace which is current seat of Estonian Parliament, Alexander Nevski Cathedral and small streets with many embassies.

View from Toompea

We found a Lido in Tallinn. Yes, the addiction is too strong to resist and we took a dinner there. In the evening we wanted to taste a local beers so we bought six different samples. The results are not yet clear.

We still had a last day in Tallinn and we the weather was beautiful. We went to the port, saw all sights from yesterday again and slowly prepared to leave. The only trouble was that we couldn´t find a tram stop. When we found it after 50 minutes, we realized that is was not more than 15 minutes walk from where we were.  After almost five hours journey we arrived in Riga and thanks to Baiba we had a place to stay. The photo below is from Tallinn but may represent how all the EPs went to different directions after the ending of the project.

Let´s hope is not Atā (Goodbye) for the whole Your Idea Wanted team (EPs and OC) but Uz redzēšanos (See you soon).

Different paths

Yes, THE IDEA has been found and yes, the Your Idea Wanted Project has ended, but it wouldn’t be me if I wouldn’t share a few (more) lines about our hectic but yet so exciting last days in Latvia. There’s so much to tell about: the Closing Event at the school in Cēsis, the Closing Event in Riga, Sightseeing and breathtaking sunset of Riga and maybe even a little about my impressions on the entire month and project (if you’re lucky).

So, Closing Event in Cēsis. The day started with a few surprises, like my falling down the stairs, having espresso coffee (Julia and I are not exactly coffee-lovers, especially without a good amount of milk in it), but also had a very nice chat with the School’s Headmistress (she even got us presents!), and the biggest surprise of all was seeing our students dress up for the event. It might seem silly, but it warmed our hearts to see how they’ve put an effort and how they were looking so smart. Not only their outfits were impressive, but the presentations of the ideas, too. In fact, we were left speechless: the PPTs, the discourses, the enthusiasm and confidence – they were excellent. We couldn’t help feeling very proud of our kids (most of them way taller than both of us), and were beaming with joy. The five groups presented the following ideas for summer business at Žagarkalns:

1. Summer Camp for skateboarding and mountainboarding

2. International Traditional Weeks

3. Mountain Boarding

4. Žagarfest

5. Trakais Rotors/Zorb Ball

Our panel of judges, consisting of Zane from Žagarkalns, Agnese – project OCP, Inga – Economics teacher and Melanie – English teacher, has had the toughest job having to choose between the ideas, but have decided that the winning group will be: group 1! With their idear to build a summer camp at Žagarkalns for skateboarding and mountain-boarding, but also with an emphasis on the environment and teaching children about useful ways to spend their time, as well as caring for the nature around them. Not only did the judges choose them as winners, but Zane also arranged a meeting with them, in order to discuss about the technicalities, and to start working on implementing this idea. It turned out that the skiing resort was considering building a summer camp, but could not find an idea that would make it exciting and different from every other camp – and group 1 had just the solution!

The other groups did marvelously well, too and Žagarkalns is thinking of implementing some aspects of their ideas, and involving them in the companies activities in the future. Saying goodbye to our students was far more difficult than I expected, to be honest. Somehow I got very much attached to this groups of very bright young Latvians, and I have enjoyed working and getting to know them immensely.  I only hope that we made a difference in their lives and have tought them something that will prove useful later on, whatever career they decide to pursue, because they definitely have the potential to be great contributors to Latvia’s prosperous future.

The Closing Event in Riga was the place where the winning groups/ideas from Saldus, Dobele and Cēsis met and competed for the “Best Idea” prize. All of us EPs got to share about our 3 weeks of the project in our towns, about our challenges and achievements to an audience consisting of students, AIESECers, teachers, friends, and the panel of judges (who were our lecturers from the 1st week) . Then, the most important part of the event: the groups presented their ideas:

Cēsis: Summer boarding camp

Dobele: Candles with sports/olympic/hockey themes

Saldus: Fishery and Fish Restaurant

All of them did very well, especially considering they were speaking in front of an audience in English. After long debating, the judges have expressed their decision and the winner of the competition was…Cēsis! Kristaps, Edgars, Erics, Darta and Jana came in front and were congratulated, awarded with diplomas and rewarded with gifts. It was a glorious moment, not only because they won, but because we’ve seen this idea being born, we’ve witnessed their passion and enthusiasm about it, we’ve been there through their challenges and then, when their hard work was acknowledged and their idea appreciated,  it was a moment to treasure.

This also meant that the project has come to an official end, and it was time for another set of goodbyes. Is there anyone in this world who likes goodbyes? It had to be done, but not before an overwhelming amount of thank you’s, and you’re awesome’s have been said from EPs to students and vice-versa, from OC to EPs and vice-versa, and so on… We all got chocolate and heart-melting words of appreciation, but only Milo and Lilia of Saldus got to have a whole class sing for them.

Saturday was the last day we EPs got to hang out as a team, and we took full advantage of it, by eating delicious meals at Lido, enjoying the splendid view of Riga from the Sky Bar at the top of Reval Hotel Latvija, enjoying the breathtaking sunset over Daugava, doing souvenir shopping and walking on water again, this time on river Daugava right in the centre of Riga.

Today in the morning I was the first one to embark on my plane home, with Julia to fly only about an hour later. Lilia left for Bavaria in the afternoon, and Ani left for probably very warm Tbilisi in the evening. Tak and Milo took off to Talinn for a couple of days’ trip, and then Milo’s back to Slovakia and Tak will continue his tour of Europe (you’ll have to let us know where your tour takes you Tak, please do).

I will now end this (again) long blog without sharing my impressions about the entire month, but I do have a sugestion to all the other EPs (and OCs): how about all of us writing a blog with our impressions, now that we’ve successfully completed our internship in Latvia?

With this question pending, I just want to add that after 2 weeks of sunny, warm spring days, it has snowed in Chisinau on Friday and I’m back to pretty much the same winter we had when I left. I could just as well go back to Latvia :)

take care and hope you are warm

Cēsis: time is running

We are now approaching the final stage of the project: choosing the best idea. This makes us both excited and nervous. Excited because all the ideas of our students are wonderful and we enjoy seeing them develop what used to be a one-sentence idea into a full-fledged business offer, with a thorough project and marketing plan. Nervous because time’s running incredibly fast and there are so many details to make right, and so many pieces of the idea-puzzle to put together that at times it’s overhelming. Even so, our students seem more positive and motivated than ever: they’re spending 2 hours in the project-class every day this week (we added an extra-lecture), they’re doing independent marketing research amongst their friends on draugiem.lv, they’re using even the very scarce breaks we have to look stuff up online for their idea and they even stay after class to chat to me and Julia about their ideas. Plainly put, they’re really into it.

Yesterday we worked hard on Project Plans, when each group had to define their goal, determine their target group, set milestones, etc. We also had Tak and Lilia who were visiting Cēsis (more about this in a later paragraph) listening to all the 5 ideas, and they gave them very constructive feedback. It was great having a different perspective on things, because me and Julia have worked with them for two weeks already and because we’ve seen how these ideas were “born”, we might’ve missed a threat or an opportunity, so having someone from “outside” help us was just what the groups needed. Also, Tak promised to arrange a discount if anyone wants to buy Sony products: Sony should expect the orders from Latvia to mount up anytime soon. So, thank you Tak and Lilia, we really appreciate your contribution, and we’ve also enjoyed having you here a ton!

Today we continued the Marketing Plan we started last week – last Thursday I gave a lecture on Marketing which I was very passionate about (and still am, this is why I keep talking about it) and started working on a marketing strategy using basic, yet effective tools. So we worked on the Product – in our case, all of the groups are working on a Service that Žagarkalns could offer during the summer – and then brainstormed about ways to promote the services. We’ve had a brief feedback session which I called “the perfect time to complain”, but to our surprise, no one had anything to complain about. It might be because they are terrified by our “totalitarian” style of teaching, or because everyone’s just really enthusiastic about the process and the end result, I can’t be sure which.

Tomorrow, we’ll be having some theoretical knowledge about Presentation Skills, and we’ll start (and finish) the presentations of ideas, so as to have them ready for Thursday morning at 9am, when the Closing event in the Cēsu Valsts ģimnāzijas will take place. We are planning to have a panel of judges, with the Headmistress, Economics Teacher, English teacher, Zane representing Žagarkalns and perhaps a lady journalist we’ve met (more about that in the next paragraph.) The judges will select one of the 5 great ideas (I don’t envy them in the slightest for the tought job they’ll be having) and on Friday the winning group will go to Riga, for the official Closing Event.

Now I’ll tell you about Tak and Lilia’s visit to Cēsis. They came with me and Julia by train on Sunday, and stayed our host family’s house. We had a very nice dinner, tried local cheeses, Cēsu beer and homemade blackcurrant wine and an even nicer conversation about everything in the world, sharing jokes, cultural differences and plans for the future. We then watched “The Picture of Dorian Gray” together, and went to bed hoping we won’t have nightmares, to wake up for breakfast at 10 o’clock on Monday. We took our lovely walk to the bus stop (Ani, you would’ve hated it), took the bus and arrived in Cēsis, we visited the market (Lilia bought herself Wellington boots which she later on tested by walking into pretty much every puddle of water she found on the street, and there were plenty!), the local library, a little shop (they had to be introduced to the local Snickers bar), the Monument of Freedom (we practiced some Kung-Fu there, too), the Church and the Monk, the Cēsis Medieval Castle and its garden, etc. After lunch in the school cafeteria (I had a delicious chees pancake with jam and sour cream that I would have again anytime!), we went to the office of the local newspaper Druva to give an interview (the paper will come out on Thursday.) At 4pm, our lesson at school started and, as I’ve mentioned before, Tak and Lilia have actively participated and helped us with their ideas and feedback.

One last thing I want to share before I finish this “short” blog, is about our basketball experience of today. Our host mother plays in one of the local women’s amateur team, and we attend her practice today, which took place in the Cēsu Valsts ģimnāzijas Sports Hall. First, we were utterly impressed with the Sports Hall (which looks more like Moldova’s National Stadium, than a small-town school sports hall) – it is not only big, but well equipped and enables students and other locals to practice a variety of sports at a high level. Second, we got to play some basketball and throw a ball or two into the basket (ok, one). Third, we got to see an actual game between the Cēsis Women’s team and another team.

We only have less than a week before we go home and time’s running by at what seems to be the speed of light, but we are looking forward to ending this project successfully, and take with us memories of great experiences in Latvia.

take care and keep warm.

Friday in Liepāja

After amazing but surprising trip to Jūrmala Lili, Tak and me decided to find out if Latvia is really so close to North Pole.  We had no lectures on Friday so we took a bus to Liepāja in the morning. Liepāja is 3rd biggest city in Latvia, hence the bus station is quite far from the city centre. As a real tourists we headed first in the Information Office. If you want to see Liepāja, just follow the notes. Literally.

There are notes on the ground (or under the snow) which will lead you through best sights in the city. We started in the Rožu laukums (Rose Square) and walked on the Latvian Musician´s Walk of Fame. Nearby is the Latvia´s 1. Rockcafe and largest guitar I have ever seen.

We played a few notes and we moved on to see Kuršu square and nearby St. Anna´s Church and St. Joseph´s Cathedral. But our main interest was to check if sea in Latvia is frozen everywhere. Next to the beach is a really nice park and it was so warm that we even took our gloves and hats off . So make a quick bets and check the result underneath.

Yes, the sea was not (completely) frozen so we made a lot of photos and went for a tea and lovely cakes in the cafe. To fulfil our cultural needs we visited Liepāja Museum which covered the history of Liepāja from ancient times till now. We still had a few hours to go so we  went to Rock Cafe. Lovely food, great atmosphere and free Wi-Fi is everything that EP needs. We found the way to bus station and left the beautiful city on the shores of the Baltic Sea behind.

Hey, hey !

Apparently with loads of snow around it

Project “Your Idea Wanted” has prepared some new activities for project EP’s & friends this Saturday (March 27). We are going to leisure centre LIDO (Dzirnavas). So anybody who is willing to have some fun, share with EP’s experience & knowledge, to skate and enjoy Latvian traditional food is more than welcome to join us! How to find us? The meeting place is @ office at 14:00 o’clock before setting off to LIDO.

Do not hesitate & join us!

Cheers!

Today was special in many ways.

Firstly, we found the shortest way from the bus station in Cēsis to the Cēsu Valsts ģimnāzija – it might appear insignificant, but the last time it took us 20-25 mins, and today we only had a 5-7 mins walk! We were pretty impressed with our achievement.

Secondly, today we had our very important session on brainstorming for actual business ideas with our students. If in the first 3 lectures we laid the foundation: with introductory session, visit to Žagarkalns , and a session on innovations and SWOT analysis, this week we got to the “meaty” part of the training: we’re developing ideas that would be solutions for an existing problem.

We’ve split the class into 5 groups of 6  (according to the results of the Belbin test), and they had to come up with names for their group (thank you for the idea, Milo), which were not only funny, but very intriguing (even secret): Anete and her 6 elves of Žagarkalns, SBM, Skoard Savers (Skiing+Snowboarding), Wazzup!!! and ADKBLT. (note:  the meaning of some names will only be revealed when the group becomes famous and their business ideas become renowned worldwide. ) After they had 45 minutes to brainstorm on ideas of activities and services for Žagarkalns’ summer business, all the groups have come up with a wide variety of options: from country cottages to BMX park, open cinema and Takeshi’s Castle etc. etc. (we had a total of 51 ideas). On Wednesday, each group will decide on which idea they will pick as their best, and will then develop an “action plan”, research the budget, and come up with a marketing strategy to advertise it.

Thirdly, today was special because we had to wait for a while before we got picked up by Ineta, our wonderful host mother, so we went to see the local dinosaurs. No, unfortunately they don’t have any, but what Cēsis does have is a little cafe where we enjoyed a nice little meal and just chilled out. We like Cēsis more and more by the day.

Tomorrow’s the best day of the week – because it’s our entirely free day- and maybe we’ll try some skiing, that is if we’ll pluck up the courage to.

this is about it from Cesis, our māja for the second week :)

take care and keep warm.
